Compulsory basic training (CBT) was introduced in 1990 to help reduce the high level of accidents among young and inexperienced motorcyclists. The CBT must be completed before a learner moped or motorcycle rider is allowed to ride on the road.
On successful completion the trainee will be issued a DL196 certificate, this will entitle a 16 year old to ride a 50cc on the road with L-Plates and over 16 years old to ride up to a 125cc motorcycle or scooter with L-Plates.
